The Melnor Automatic Rain Monitor #3290 seems like a great idea at an inexpensive price...if only it worked.
It attaches between the hose and the the sprinkler and if it fills with a 1/2" of rain water, is supposed to stop the flow of water to the sprinkler. I filled it to various levels and even all the way with water to test it and while it diminished the flow, did not shut it off. Additionally, there is an automatic drain valve which never closes and so even if it did rain, would keep emptying the unit and allow the flow to continue. It is also supposed to be installed perfectly level to operate properly. How many lawns or shrub areas are perfectly level?
I don't believe my unit was defective as I could hear a ball or float moving inside it which I suppose is meant to shut the flow. Poor execution of a good idea. Doesn't even rate 1 star & I would have given it zero stars if the site accepted that.
