(More customer reviews)I bought this inverter for my Silverado 3500. I use it to power all kinds of things out on jobsites...radio chargers, coffee pots, laptops, cell phones, iPods, printers (not lasers since this is a modified square wave) etc. It makes triclicity, but could use some refinement.
Unit is made by Superex Canada under license for AC delco and is manufactured in Taiwan. Apparently in Canada (or Taiwan?), their truck batteries are no more than 3 feet from the inside of their cab. Must be nice. In my truck, it took about 10ft to run it from the transmission hump to the passenger side battery in my silverado. This is behind the dash, under the carpet, thru the knockout in the floor and up under the firewall to the battery. So the 3 feet of 6ga wire they provided didn't work so much. So yes, this unit does come with power leads while others don't, but they were pretty much worthless. I found a set of 2ga jumper cables on sale, chopped the alligator clips off and used the 2 ga to ensure my voltage didn't drop. The chassis ground is a nice touch though it does mean another wire. The pos (+) and neg (-) attachment bolts on the housing are pretty close to each other, esp with 2ga wire, but I've got the ring clamps insulated pretty well with heatshrink tubing so there's no issue there.
Additionally, Canadian electric plugs must not extend very far outside the footprint of the plug, or else they all have recessed cutouts for their GFCI receptacles. Because every time I plug something in, the plug housing trips the NON-RECESSED test/reset button on the GFCI. What a terrible design, I'm even debating taking the unit apart, going to home depot and replacing the GFCI receptacle with a $5 unit that has recessed test/reset buttons. For now, I have to make sure to carefully plug things in, but not all the way, otherwise it will trip the GFCI buttons. I did buy a 7 port surge suppressor with a 360 degree rotating plug that I can angle just right and avoid hitting the test or reset button, but it's still not a very well thought out choice of outlet.
Aside from that, the battery voltage and power draw display is a nice touch. You can choose one or the other via pushbutton, and it does not alternate the display back and forth between the two. I leave it on battery unless I've got a whole bunch of things plugged into my power strip at the same time. The unit is not very loud, even with the fan running, and it does have cutouts to screw it down to the floor. I used some short self tapping machine screws to mount it thru the sheetmetal on my trans tunnel, though it would be nice if they provided them. The unit feels rather weighty and well built, and the blue color is very bright and sharp. Add 2 5v USB plugs to the improvements I noted above and this would be the bees knees, esp since the price I paid is considerably less than it's currently listed for now (~75 bucks cheaper).
