My house has several of these which were installed by the builder. They have a slide-out battery door, which would be pretty convenient, except that the battery door doesn't slide in/out easily and the manufacturer says you're supposed to disconnect the AC power before changing the battery anyway.
One of them started chirping recently. It was hard to find the one that was upset, since the red light doesn't come on despite the instructions saying it will. I replaced the battery, but it continued to chirp for several minutes. I tried another battery, no luck. Not wanting to be left without a detector in my basement, I bought another identical one and figured I'd send the bad one back so I have a spare in case another one breaks.
To get repair service, USI's instructions say you have to send $5 for return shipping and provide the original sales receipt. Of course, I don't have the receipt for the failed unit since it came with the house, and paying for shipping both ways pretty much negates any reason to return the thing.
