(More customer reviews)I bought one of these for a friend who lives in a trailer, out in the sticks, but he works 45 minutes away in the city. As we all know, trailers are a bit more prone to freeze ups. Well, he'd frozen up once when his furnace quit on him, but no damage to pipes. So, I thought this would be the best gift ever! Well, after he hooked it up to his phone line, he failed to CALL the thing to check it one ominous, very cold night. He was busy chasing some girl he didn't need to be with anyway. I digress... That is the key...it is NOT automatic...you have to call when you're concerned and it will tell you if the ambient temperature is below 40F. So...one really cold night away from home, he didn't call it, furnace quit, major plumbing expense! So...if you can remember to call "it", you'll be fine. However, if you want "it" to call you, better opt for a pricier product...add about two hundred bucks to this to start. Plus...as I learned, you feel REALLY dumb if you have a low-temp alarm hooked up and then forget to call "it". Think about it. =-( Like having a seat belt, but not wearing it. Or a motorcycle helmet and not wearing it...just when you might need it in a crash. If you can spare the extra couple hundred bucks...go for the one with the built-in dialer, and stay away from girls that are bad for you. That's just my humble opinion. =-)
