(More customer reviews)Our house was built in late 2001. the house has these 22-790 installed in it. Recently the alarms started acting up. Some of the alarms would just go off randomly. When one starts chirping indicating a weak battery and I put in a brand new battery it keeps chirping.
I figured maybe I should just replace them since they were 8-9 years old. So I called Universal and they told me that I could just buy new ss-790s to plug in. I bought 7 new ss-790s only to find out that they completely change the mounting bracket so that the new ones don't fit the old ones. The wiring adapter is the same, but you will have change the mounting bracket (turn off power, remove all mouting brackets, rewire new ones, install the new ones) before plugging in the new ss-790s. I asked why and was told the constantly are making improvements. However, if you look at the detectors...there is no reason for changing the mounting brackets. They could have kept them the same so you could just plug in new ones.
For this fact alone I am returning mine and purchasing a different brand. Maybe they will do the same stupid thing....however I would rather give another company a chance then deal with Universal anymore.
Reading online I have read about many people having issues with Universal alarms going off. I don't know if this is just a problem with Universal or not. My main issue with Univerasal was keeping the same model number but changing the mouting brackets. This is going to be a huge issue once people start changing the detectors (supposed to do every 10 years). How do you think people are going to feel when they buy the same model thinking they can just plug it in and now they likely will have to hire an electrician to re-install the same model. This is a BAD BAD way to treat customers. How can they expect loyalty.
