First Alert CO600 Plug In Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

First Alert CO600 Plug In Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Average Reviews:

I purchased this for my Mom, who has a very low tolerance for any type of electronics that has more than one button. This fits the bill perfectly -- just plug it in, and it works. Other models have more advanced features, such as a digitial display or a batter backup, but if you're looking for simplicity and a low cost, this is a great choice.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert CO600 carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The unit monitors and re-alarms if carbon monoxide levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. UL listed.--Bree Norlander

Before ordering this unit I spoke with a Safe-T-Alert representative. She assured me that this unit was a direct replacement for the CCI unit that was in my RV. It is not. I needed to rout out the oopening on two sides and narrow it slightly on one side. However, except for the woodworking, it was easy to install and works well. As long as they continue to make this unit and keep the sizes the same I will buy replacements was each age out. If it fit exactly in the openning as I was led to believe I would have rated it 5 stars.

I certainly hope whomever made this particular hunk of junk has one installed in there home and knows the joy of being woken up every two or three hours for no reason. Like the reviewer above me, the problem started as an odd chirp every now and again. Keep in mind this is a brand new house. Contractor said it was nothing to worry about and would stop on its own. It has now turned into five seconds of beeping every two hours or so, which would be fine if I didn't own a pair of ears or feel like getting a decent nights sleep ever again.

First Alert FCD3 Battery Powered Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

First Alert FCD3 Battery Powered Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Average Reviews:

This product should be a necessity in everyone's home. It is very basic; it doesn't have a parts-per-million LCD display. So, there is no real ability to tell if you're air quality is marginal or not. However, it will save your life with it's standard functions. There are 3 LED lights: battery, service, and alarm.
My 6 month experience with this has been very good. The battery light blinks intermittently to tell you it needs changing. It does start squeaking when it becomes nearly out of energy. The battery changing experience is quite unique. The mega-plastic detents on the back panel make it very difficult to open and close (good/bad - you make up your mind). And there is a little plastic spring bar - allowing you to only replace the back cover when a battery is inserted - sort of an ingenious way of making sure there is a battery present in the unit(good/bad). The back plate is wall mountable too.
The Cyclops lights are actually quite bright - so it might bother you if you're a light sleeper or plan to put it in a child's bedroom. Overall, though the price is exceptional - I got mine at nearly double the Amazon price. I'd give it 4 stars had it not been for the bargain basement price and value.

We bought this CO Alarm after we had a CO incident. Our neighbor is a fire fighter and recommended a unit with a digital display.
This unit was out of the box and in use in about 5 minutes.
All Kidde CO Alarms are UL Listed and other brands are not. Google "UL Listing" to find out more about this established testing lab. Some states mandate consumers have UL Listed smoke and CO Alarms. Retailers can sell non-UL Listed products so watch your state codes or you may be liable.

First Alert CO615 Carbon Monoxide Plug-In Alarm with Battery Backup and Digital Display Review

First Alert CO615 Carbon Monoxide Plug-In Alarm with Battery Backup and Digital Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this to supplement our Kidde Nighthawk CO detectors, the 900-0234 curved model with a 7-year warranty (we didn't want to put all our eggs in one basket!). The First Alert looks to be a fine CO detector.
Here are some positives:
1) It has the plug on a wire, so that you can put the detector somewhere other than right in the outlet. That's helpful as outlets can have other adapters in them making it hard to plug it in or be behind something rendering the CO detection harder.
2) It can be tested or silenced with a remote (hold down the volume or channel button for 5 seconds) (our Tivo remote worked!). (Some of their other products with the remote features have received critical reviews as regular remote operation has set them off!)
3) Operates on AC with a battery backup (2 AAs)
4) Batteries ARE included!!
Here are several negatives:
1) 5-year warranty unlike the Kidde's 7-year.
2) A "manual" that's a huge, cumbersome, folded sheet, with small print that's blurry and hard to read. They should supply a magnifying glass with it! This is a major concern as one needs to refer to the text for installation, for operation, to determine what to do under certain conditions, etc.
3) Yes, one can park the detector on a bookshelf (with the cord going to the outlet), but the detector itself wobbles! The previous Kidde CO detector Nighthawk model--the COPP-3 -- has the plug on a cord feature, along with a nifty slide out stand that makes it stable. (We had good luck with that model, but many did not. Plus, it's an older model, with only a 5-year warranty which is why we went for the 900-0234).
4) The CO level only shows up if one presses a button. It's a cool blue light, but unlike the Nighthawk's red LED that shows you the current CO level at all times (a reassuring 0), this displays a blank screen with a recessed green light. For some, it could be a plus as it would be less intrusive especially as the Kidde's red LED seems to be much brighter on their latest model.
5) The detector displays a battery icon when it's plugged into AC and the battery back up is installed! That's unnerving as it makes it seem as if it's running on the battery! Very odd design choice!
6) The test alarm didn't seem as loud as the Kidde's.
7) Battery cover is the front of the device, which the manual didn't explain or illustrate, and it doesn't shut well--or rather, it's awkward and you feel as if you're about to break the lightweight plastic parts.
8) One other issue, which plagues all the CO detectors and many other products on the market, is the infuriating, hard plastic packaging. It's hard to open and I even cut myself on it. There are alternatives that are just as secure but much friendlier to the environment and the customer! In comparing the two (Kidde Nighthawk 900-0234 and the First Alert CO615), the advantage clearly goes to the Kidde. It just seems a more professional, better designed, and better thought out product. Part of that is because we're used to the Kidde design and like the red LED, but it also seems more solid (the First Alert has the seemingly fragile/flimsy cover), and has a higher quality, usable manual--it's a real booklet that's more readable and better organized (it also has a bigger font than FA's, but still could be larger).

I really like the way this ProTech 7035-SL Lithium Powered Carbon Monoxide Detectors with Digital Readout and Locked Battery Compartment works. The old one that had from a different manufacturer had a battery that constantly failed and the indicator was not clear. The digital readout is much better then the flashing light. This new lithium powered one provides a better sense of security and comfort because the digital reading is clear and specific and much better then the light flashing so its been a worthwhile switch to me.

Universal Security Instruments SS-790 120-Volt AC/DC Wired-In Ionization Smoke and Fire Alarm Review

Universal Security Instruments SS-790 120-Volt AC/DC Wired-In Ionization Smoke and Fire Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our house was built in late 2001. the house has these 22-790 installed in it. Recently the alarms started acting up. Some of the alarms would just go off randomly. When one starts chirping indicating a weak battery and I put in a brand new battery it keeps chirping.
I figured maybe I should just replace them since they were 8-9 years old. So I called Universal and they told me that I could just buy new ss-790s to plug in. I bought 7 new ss-790s only to find out that they completely change the mounting bracket so that the new ones don't fit the old ones. The wiring adapter is the same, but you will have change the mounting bracket (turn off power, remove all mouting brackets, rewire new ones, install the new ones) before plugging in the new ss-790s. I asked why and was told the constantly are making improvements. However, if you look at the detectors...there is no reason for changing the mounting brackets. They could have kept them the same so you could just plug in new ones.
For this fact alone I am returning mine and purchasing a different brand. Maybe they will do the same stupid thing....however I would rather give another company a chance then deal with Universal anymore.
Reading online I have read about many people having issues with Universal alarms going off. I don't know if this is just a problem with Universal or not. My main issue with Univerasal was keeping the same model number but changing the mouting brackets. This is going to be a huge issue once people start changing the detectors (supposed to do every 10 years). How do you think people are going to feel when they buy the same model thinking they can just plug it in and now they likely will have to hire an electrician to re-install the same model. This is a BAD BAD way to treat customers. How can they expect loyalty.

Average Reviews:

I ordered the CD-9795 Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detector for $59.95. The order was shipped with lighting speed, very pleased with the shipment duration but, I inspected the contents and read the box which contained the Detector and the box indicates a model CD-9795, good so far, exactly what I ordered. I then pulled the detector out and turned it over to ensure the model on the detector was the CD-9795 that I ordered for 59.95. Well, the model in the box was a USI-7795, basically the same unit but, if you actually look up that model number you'll find that Amazon has this product for 37.20, which indicates it's a newer model. So this is very suspicious, selling a product as in a CD-9795 for 59.95 the box arrived indicated a CD-9795 but the content is a USI-7795 which sells for 37.20. This is very deceptive but after contacting Amazon, they took care of the difference and credited my account. Just be sure you're getting what you ordered. That was over a 20 dollar difference, let's say they sell 1000 of these that's a $20,000 dollar windfall over and beyond their cost.

I moved into a new house that had been built about a year before. For the past 17 months I have been changing batteries very often in my three CO detectors. I finally started putting dates on the batteries and found that they only last 2 months (1 month in a cold basement). I'm guessing I spent about $70 in batteries. The batteries are only there to kick in when the AC power fails, which it rarely does and never for very long. However, my tests indicate that the batteries are being drained while the AC power is properly working.
I contacted the company for warranty replacements and was told I would have to pay $20 for shipping & HANDLING to get my "FREE" warranty replacements. I made a big stink and got them to send them at their expense. Only time will tell if the replacements work. Till then I can work on the problem of random beeps from my BRK smoke detectors.

The BRK hardwire carbon monoxide alarm detects dangerous CO gas and allows you peace of mind with its battery backup. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, deadly gas. It can be emitted by sources including gas or oil furnaces, gas clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, charcoal grills, gas ranges, and space heaters. A clogged chimney, improper venting, and attached garages can also cause carbon monoxide accumulation. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least one CO alarm should be installed near a home's sleeping area. This BRK alarm is perfect for bedrooms, as well as hallways, and basements.
The BRK CO5120BN hardwire CO alarm with battery backup includes these features:
Quick plug-in power connector for easy installation.
120-volt AC inter-connectable (with maximum 18 compatible devices). The alarm can be interconnected with up to 12 other compatible smoke alarms and six compatible devices like bells, horns, repeaters and door closers. If one unit triggers an alarm, all smoke alarms in the series will sound. Power indicators show which unit in the series initiated the alarm.
Microprocessor controlled for fewer nuisance alarms.
Single test/silence button which both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality.
Automatically performs internal test of functionality.
Latching alarm indicator which automatically identifies which unit initiated the alarm.
Battery drawer lock and mounting bracket lock for tamper resistance.
AC power indicator and alarm indicator light.
Low battery warning "chirp" and missing battery tab.

ProTech 8505 Commercial Carbon Monoxide Monitor
Average Reviews:

I bought this from Amazon about 2 years ago. I was concerned that our relatively new house might have carbon monoxide issues. Since the alarm never went off, and rarely showed a number over 0, I felt good that the house is safe. If you buy this, know that the warranty is for one year. Also know that after 2 years, the "carbon sensor" will begin to fail, and that the manual states it's not responsible for monitoring beyond the first year. So if you need a long-term monitor, this will need yearly replacement. (And for all I know, all of them need it, too.)

The 2010 PRO-TECH 8505 Battery Powered Commercial Carbon Monoxide Monitor features include an electrochemical sensor, continuous digital display, peak level memory, duration and time of peak level, TWA readout, sensor life monitor, and manual backlight.Carbon monoxide levels are sampled and recorded every 5 seconds by a state-of-the-art electrochemical sensor. CO levels detected from 10-500ppm are automatically displayed. When a chronic carbon monoxide level of 30ppm or more is detected, a flashing Red LED and 85db pulsating alarm are activated.Pressing the reset button temporarily mutes the audible signal while the carbon monoxide level is rechecked. If the monitor continues to detect carbon monoxide levels of 20 ppm or more, the audible and visual alarm signals will reactivate automatically within 5 minutes. If carbon monoxide levels drop below 20 ppm, the alarm signals will not be reactivated. The highest carbon monoxide level detected (from 10 to 500 ppm), the duration of the peak level, how long ago the peak occurred, and the average CO level detected for the previous 8 hours can be displayed by pressing the memory button. An internal clock monitors the sensor life and activates visual and audible expiration signals after two years. The Pro-Tech 8505 Commercial Carbon Monoxide Monitor complies with OSHA and NIOSH exposure limits. Backed by a one year limited factory warranty.*Specifications subject to change without notice. Display accuracy is first year estimate only, and may also be affected by environmental conditions and other circumstances beyond manufacturer's control. We have several of them that came with our new house in addition to the 1204 model smoke alarms. They are all problematic. They go through batteries every 6 months and they 'chirp' in the middle of the night. The company is not easy to deal with. Recently all of them went off at the same time at 4 am and there was no smoke or fire... the company says to vacuum them out... easy on 15 foot ceilings?... they are a bad product. As happened to some of the other reviewers, the battery door on this detector broke the first time I opened it. I decided to give it a chance anyway and installed the batteries. The next day it randomly "alerted" me to high Carbon Monoxide levels. I silenced the alarm and then pushed the button to find out the "Peak Level" so that I would know why the alarm went off. It stayed at 0. Needless to say, I returned this. I ended up buying a Kidde brand detector (which I decided on after much research).

Detector arrived on time and was what I ordered. I would have liked to been able to know the manufactured date before I purchased it. I didn't know until it arrived that it was over a year old already. Since it is supposed to be replaced after 5 years that is significant information. I had an awfully hard time finding a flush mount version though so I was glad to get it.
