Kidde KN-COPF-i Silhouette Wire-in Low Profile Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

(More customer reviews)The CO detector was installed several weeks ago, so it is really too early to know how it truly performs. I do like the small size and the low profile. It looks good compared to other CO detectors.
As recommended, the detector was installed in the hallway just outside our bedroom. The display is incredibly bright. It is easy to read in the daytime and is probably sunlight readable. However, since we leave the bedroom door open, it lights up the entire bedroom at night. Now I wish I had installed it at the far end of the hallway just to reduce the light level.
I did the test the CO detector and cross-test with a Silhouette smoke detector. The CO detector does alarm for fire and displays the word FIRE. The Silhouette smoke detector did not report for the CO test. It did not seem that the CO detector came out of test mode cleanly. It's not clear if I didn't do the test correctly or if the detector was stuck in a weird state. Later (and also after a power failure) everything seems normal.

Which proves it works to Govenment Standards. This model does what it is supposed to do, the more expensive models just have more features that you probably will not notice on an everyday basis anyway.
This is the least expensive model we have seen that functions, so we hope at this price everyone should have one in their home and garage.

We plugged it in and about a month later, it woke us at 4:00 a.m. to tell us that it detected CO in the air. I called the fire department to check the CO levels, and none was detected anywhere in the home. One of the firemen said that he had the same thing happen to him with his First Alert CO detector. ALL of the firemen said that the First Alert detector was prone to giving false alarms, and that the Kidde Knighthawk was the best on the market. After the firemen left, I searched the internet and found that many other people have had similar problems. A few people compared CO levels side-by-side, using the First Alert unit and the more sophisticated fireman's unit. The First Alert unit consistently detected CO in the air when there was none.

I was pleasantly surprised! The software works well and installed on my Win 2003 server quickly and easily. I had this up and running in less than a half hour.
It emails and texts us if the temperature or humidity falls outside of the range we set. I tested it all and it works great!
What a great, inexpensive product. The software is pretty great considering that other systems that do the exact same thing and with similar software cost 10x more than this!

These alarms are powered primarily by your house wiring, and if power fails, by a 9v battery. If you only have one alarm, you only need a hot & neutral (black & white wires, plus ground) in a ceiling box. To interconnect two or more alarms, you'll need 14/3 or 12/3 cable (black, white, red, and a ground wire) from the first alarm to the last. The included quick connect wiring harness's female jack has black, white, & red pigtails that connect to your house wiring. The pigtail's jack connects to the back of the alarm, so it's easy to remove or replace an alarm if needed. If an alarm in the "system" is activated, the red wire goes hot from that alarm, activating all interconnected alarms. There are 5 interconnected alarms in a house we're remodeling, and when set off (as a test), it's ear-splitting racket, designed to wake you from a deep sleep.
If your house has 14/2 or 12/2 wire (versus 3 conductor) to the alarm's ceiling box, this product will still work, except for the interconnecting feature. I.e., an activated alarm won't activate the other alarms.
The model i2060 needs only one 9v battery, and it couldn't be easier or faster to replace. I.e., without removing the alarm from it's base plate, press the battery cover door on the unit's front. A hinged door opens allowing you to slide the old battery out, replace it, and shut the door. Since I can reach 8' ceilings without a ladder, I can replace the i2060 battery in under 5 seconds!
110 v smoke alarms with a battery backup do NOT have to be replaced as a set. Their only "communication" with other alarms is, when one is activated its red wire goes hot to the other alarms. So, you only need to replace a problem alarm, not all of them.
This is an ionization alarm only. I.e., it's not also a photo-electric sensor. Ionization sensors are best at detecting fast, flaming fires. Photoelectric sensors are best at detecting smoldering fires.

A few days later the device started to go off in the middle of a calm sunny day. I replaced the battery again. A few more days and the device went off in the middle of a calm dry night. The indoor receiver never activated. I reset the device but it continue to go off the rest of the night until I removed it from the pool and again the indoor receiver never activated. Upon observation the device was discolored where it sat in the water (about a week) so I had the water tested professionally, the water chemistry was perfect.

Rather than having defined screw holes, there are a series of conjoined slots. These slots must be tightened significantly in order to securely mount the base. Unfortunately, the bracket is poorly designed where as the torque applied when tightening one box screw will dislodge the other screw. This is a major oversight by the manufacturer, which creates about 5 minutes of swearing your first time installing this product.
